WAIER-Fogarty Foundation Postgraduate Student Research Prize 2021
Jane Kirkham
The main contribution of Jane’s research to education in WA is to provide an understanding of the mechanisms that influence mathematics choice decisions of Year 10 students, and to illuminate gender biases in preferences for mathematics courses. Her application is for funding to support attendance and a presentation at the 2022 Network Gender & STEM Conference, in Germany.

- From Curtin University, for his PhD thesis: Learning the emotional rules of teaching: A Foucauldian analysis of ethical self-formation in pre-service teacher education; Dr Saul Karnovsky
- From Murdoch University for her PhD thesis: Supporting and transforming school principals’ wellbeing and leadership; Dr Johanne Klap
- From The University of Notre Dame for her PhD thesis: Perspectives of Year 12 students from five Catholic secondary schools in Western Australia towards teaching as a career; Dr Lucie McCrory
- From The University of Western Australia for the best postgraduate publication entitled ‘Research on the construction of geography as a senior secondary school subject’. And published in Education Research and Perspectives; Dr John Mortimer
Early Career Award Recipients 2021
Dr Fiona Mayne
Fiona’s PhD and postdoctoral work have made a significant contribution to empirical, theoretical, and methodological knowledge in early childhood research ethics, children’s rights-based participatory research, and technology education. She has won numerous Faculty, University, National and International awards and is first author on 8 published peer-reviewed journal articles, has a book in the production phase and supervises 9 HDR students.
Dr Sonja Kuzich.
Sonja has made an impact in two areas of research: sustainability and literacy. Just some examples…. Her contributions include being a key member of 4 current and 4 completed funded research projects worth nearly $2.5m. She has been invited to be the lead investigator in an ARC Linkage grant. Social media, radio interviews, conference presentations and creating resources for teachers are some of the ways Sonja has enabled her research findings to have practical application for educators.
WAIER-Fogarty Foundation Postgraduate Student Research Prize 2020
Felicity Roux
In 2020 we were delighted to award the WAIER-Fogarty Foundation Postgraduate Student Research Prize to Felicity Roux, who was a PhD candidate in the Curtin University School of Public Health. Felicity’s research focused on developing and trialling a school-based ovulatory-menstrual health literacy program centred on the whole person. It can be viewed here.

Olivia Johnston, PhD student at UWA
Olivia’s research incorporates students’ voices about their teachers’ expectation, where improvements could improve educational equity for students experiencing the perpetuation of disadvantage through our Western Australian (WA) schools. Olivia was awarded $5000 to contribute to costs associated with presenting her research findings at the European Conference for Educational Research (ECER) 2020 (Glasgow University, Scotland) and the Emerging Researcher’s Conference (ERC) 2020 (Glasgow University, Scotland).

Awarded a grant in the amount of $2000 to be used toward the project titled Teacher education institutions as co-creators of inclusivity in Health and Physical Education.

Awarded a grant in the amount of $1000 to be used toward the project titled Teaching Intercultural Capabilities to First-Year Humanities Students at Curtin University.
Dr Janean Robinson, Sessional Tutor, School of Education, Murdoch University
Awarded a grant in the amount of $1000 to be used toward attending the Re-imagining Education for Democracy conference to disseminate research findings through the presentation titled Telling Jacinta’s story: Confronting neoliberal policy in public secondary schooling and re-imagining socially just alternatives.
