Mathematics Learning Area Outcome 8 states:Choose and use a repertoire of mental, paper and calculator computational strategies for each operation, meeting needed degrees of accuracy and judging the reasonableness of results.
These questions were explored as part of a study carried out by Dr Paul Swan from Edith Cowan University.
- How do children choose between mental, written and calculator methods of calculation?
- How successful are they in executing their chosen method of calculation?
- Do they in fact have a choice?
- How may we encourage children to make better or more appropriate choices?
Dr Swan will present the findings of the study and then show how key findings have been used in a practical way to encourage children to make computation choices. The final aspect of Mathematics Learning Area Outcome 8, Judging the reasonableness of results, will also be explored and practical strategies for developing this ability will be provided.
Commencing with a strong research flavour, this seminar will end on a highly practical note.
| Recently Dr Swan received one of the WAIER Post Graduate Awards 2004 for his PhD research, thesis title The computation choices made by students in years 5 to 7. |
